Willem Dafoe was born into a family of seven children. His parents, William Dafoe and Sharon Kaye, raised him in a strict religious environment. Despite the challenges of growing up in a large family, Dafoe developed a passion for acting at a young age. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison before dropping out to pursue his acting career.
His early years were marked by a desire to explore different cultures and artistic expressions, which eventually led him to co-found the Wooster Group, an experimental theater company in New York City.
