Without a functioning tension spring, a miter saw can be dangerous.
  1. Unplug the miter saw. This will ensure safety while carrying out the repair process.

  2. Hold the saw handle with one hand while you release the hold-down latch and remove the locking pins that attach the cutting head to the miter surface. Depending on the model of miter saw, there may be more than one pin.

  3. Lift up the cutting head and set it carefully on its side, being careful not to touch the saw blade.

  4. Use a flat screwdriver to pry one end of the tension spring loose, then pull it out of its casing. Place the new tension spring in place of the old spring, locking both ends into place.

  5. Lift the cutting head into place on the miter surface, and replace the locking pins. Test to make sure the spring tension is correct and that the cutting head lifts up properly before plugging in the saw.
