The game follows the story of a protagonist, a high school student who returns to his hometown after a tragic car accident that took the lives of his parents. The protagonist discovers the ability to summon a Persona, a manifestation of inner strength. Joining the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.), a group of Persona users, they fight against Shadows during the mysterious Dark Hour and unravel the secrets surrounding it.
